Peter Doig at The Courtauld

This month we look to the fantastic, major exhibition of new and recent works by artist Peter Doig – including paintings created since the artist’s move from Trinidad to London in 2021.

Doig is a Scottish painter, renowned for his emotive figurative pieces and fantastical landscapes. This brave and innovative artist's work has been described by critics as “jewels of genuine imagination...sincere work and humble creativity”. This exhibition at The Courtauld delivers exactly this.

Since relocating to London, Doig has been developing paintings started in Trinidad, New York and elsewhere, which have been worked up alongside completely fresh paintings, including a new London subject. The works produced for the exhibition at convey this particularly creative experience of transition, as Doig explores a rich variety of places, people, memories and ways of painting.

Inspired by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists on display at the Courtauld, Doig has used them as a touchstone for his own painting and printmaking over the course of his career. Make sure to see an impressive collection at the gallery, from Cézanne, and Gauguin to Manet, Monet, Pissarro and Van Gogh.

Do let us know your thoughts if you visit, and take time to see the other exceptional Renaissance holdings at the museum. More on these can be found in the articles below.
